Standardised Maritime English Training for Port and Shore Personnel

Clear Communication Where Ships Meet Shore

About PraC-MARENG Plus

PraC-MARENG Plus is a European cooperation project developing a standardised, digital, and job-oriented Maritime English training framework designed specifically for port and shore personnel working in the maritime sector.

The project supports safer, clearer, and more efficient communication between ships and shore-based operations through practical, scenario-based learning aligned with international maritime standards.

The Challenge We Address

Maritime operations depend on precise communication. While Standard Maritime Communication Phrases (SMCP) provide a common language framework for seafarers at sea, structured Maritime English training for port and shore personnel remains limited and fragmented across Europe.

Miscommunication during port operations, cargo handling, mooring, pilotage, terminal coordination, and emergency situations continues to be a contributing factor to incidents, inefficiencies, and safety risks. Differences in language proficiency, professional terminology, and operational context create gaps that traditional language courses do not adequately address.

PraC-MARENG Plus responds to this challenge by focusing on real operational scenarios, job-specific communication needs, and digital learning methods that reflect the realities of modern port and shore environments.

What the Platform Delivers

PraC-MARENG Plus will deliver a comprehensive digital training and assessment ecosystem, including:

  • A job-oriented Maritime English training programme tailored to port and shore personnel roles

  • Scenario-based learning modules reflecting real port and shore operations

  • Alignment with Standard Maritime Communication Phrases (SMCP) and operational best practices

  • A digital learning platform supporting flexible, remote, and self-paced learning

  • Assessment and validation tools to support competence recognition and certification pathways

  • A green, paperless learning approach, reducing the need for physical materials and travel

The platform is designed to support both initial training and continuous professional development, contributing to improved safety, efficiency, and communication quality in maritime operations.

European Cooperation

PraC-MARENG Plus is developed through a strong partnership of European higher education and maritime training institutions, combining academic expertise, operational experience, and digital innovation capacity.

The project brings together partners from multiple EU Member States, ensuring that the training framework reflects diverse operational contexts, regulatory environments, and labour market needs across Europe.
