About
PraC-MARENG Plus “PRActical and Communication-based MARitime ENGlish Plus” is a European cooperation project developed under the Erasmus+ Programme – Higher Education Cooperation (KA220-HED) Action. The project addresses a long-standing gap in maritime education by focusing on standardised Maritime English communication for port and shore personnel.
While international maritime communication standards such as Standard Maritime Communication Phrases (SMCP) are well established for seafarers at sea, structured training for shore-based maritime professionals remains fragmented and inconsistent across Europe. PraC-MARENG Plus responds to this challenge by developing a digital, job-oriented, and scenario-based training framework tailored specifically to the needs of port and shore operations.
The project brings together higher education institutions and maritime training experts from across Europe to ensure that the developed training reflects real operational environments, current regulatory frameworks, and the evolving digital and green transformation of the maritime sector.

Project Objectives

The main objective of PraC-MARENG Plus is to improve safety, efficiency, and clarity of communication in port and shore maritime operations through the development of a standardised Maritime English training and assessment framework.
More specifically, the project aims to:
Develop a job-oriented Maritime English training programme tailored to port and shore personnel
Promote the use of standardised communication practices aligned with SMCP and operational requirements
Support digital transformation in maritime education through flexible, online learning tools
Enhance communication competence and operational awareness in safety-critical port activities
Contribute to labour mobility and competence recognition across European maritime sectors
Support a green and paperless learning approach, reducing environmental impact
Through these objectives, PraC-MARENG Plus contributes to strengthening maritime education and training systems while supporting safer and more sustainable port operations across Europe.
Target Groups
PraC-MARENG Plus is designed to address the needs of a wide range of stakeholders involved in port and shore maritime operations, including:
Primary Target Groups
Port and terminal personnel involved in cargo handling, mooring, and vessel coordination
Port authority staff and shore-based operational officers
Safety officers, planners, and supervisors working in port environments
Shore-based maritime professionals interacting directly with ship crews
Secondary Target Groups
Higher education institutions and maritime training providers
Maritime students preparing for shore-based operational roles
Public authorities and bodies responsible for maritime safety and training standards
Industry stakeholders seeking improved communication practices in port operations
By addressing both operational personnel and education providers, the project ensures that its outcomes are sustainable, transferable, and adaptable across different national and institutional contexts.
